Window Materials
Windows for residential houses can be mostly made out of 3 materials:
Wood Windows:
They are the most expensive of the 3, and they may require additional maintenance during their lifetime, like painting or staining.
Aluminium Windows:
They are less expensive than wood but about 30% more expensive than vinyl. Also, less energy efficient than wood and vinyl.
Vinyl Windows:
Less expensive than wood and aluminium and have the same energy efficiency than wood. At Bison Windows, Vinyl windows are our specialty!
Installation
There are two types of installations: full frame installation and retrofit or insert installation.
Full frame replacement - all parts of old window are removed up to house frame and replaced by new materials and new window.
Retrofit or insert replacement - Only the glass is replaced and the inside window finishing stays. Usually, it is less expensive than a full frame replacement, and can be a better option in old houses or in basements.
